Tourism Practitioners at the Enugu midweek meeting announced that their World Tourism Day celebration this year aligns with the global theme. The theme is: “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.”
This theme, set by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), underscores the need for tourism development that is inclusive, environmentally responsible, and driven by innovation. It seeks to reframe tourism: not just as growth in visitor numbers or revenue, but as a force for social, economic, and ecological betterment.
At the meeting, Chief Mike Mgboh, STPN’s National President, expressed his belief that new continuous-training programme, inspired by Mr. Ernest Ohagwu’s lecture, will be a cornerstone for achieving this transformation at the grassroots. By equipping members and staff with up-to-date skills in hotel management, sustainable operations, and guest satisfaction, the association hopes its practitioners can better contribute to Nigeria’s sustainable tourism goals.
STPN set up a committee for this year’s World Tourism Day. Committee. members were to devise events and collaborations that reflect the theme. Practitioners suggested workshops on eco-friendly hospitality; sessions on community engagement; promotion of green practices in hotels and tour operations; and showcasing how tourism can drive positive change beyond mere economic metrics.
With a new STPN office in Enugu, the logistical groundwork is laid to coordinate these happenings more efficiently, especially for practitioners in the Southeast. Chief Mgboh closed the meeting by emphasising that this year’s World Tourism Day offers STPN an opportunity to demonstrate how practitioners can lead sustainable transformation in Nigeria’s tourism sector.
